In 1829, James Wightman built a log cabin on a hill near present-day Midvale and named it Wightman's Fort after himself and his party who had explored this area for two months in 1828-29. On November 15th, 1830, Wightman's fort was burned by Indians led by Chief Joseph when they invaded from nearby Cedar Valley seeking help against an advancing Mormon Battalion under Brigham Young. In 1831, Brigham Young acquired 3 acres (1 km²) along side Huntsville Creek where he founded what would become Midvale on January 1st, 1832 as a farmstead known as Springdale or Winter Quarters for Pioneer families who were coming overland from Nauvoo (now Chicago). The first post office in Midvale opened on April 6th, 1834 with John Cenchreaux as postmaster; General David Orem became Postmaster on July 1st, 1861 . The population reached 859 within one year following its establishment!
