The Logan military gift history begins with the arrival of the Mormon Battalion in 1847. The battalion was sent to Utah Territory to help fight against the Mexicans. After arriving, the Mormons began building a fortress called Fort Leavenworth. In 1850, President Brigham Young ordered the fort destroyed because he felt it was underminining his claim to be both leader and God in Mormonism. The fort remained standing until its demolition in 1897. In 1853, Logan was chosen as the temporary capital of Utah Territory due to its location on the Great Salt Lake. It would not become capital city until 1870. In 1861, Logan became an incorporated town and received its first post office- name, Kimball City. On July 24, 1862, during the American Civil War, Union General John Custer attacked and destroyed Fort Leavenworth while supplies were being unloaded from a wagon train that had been traveling through Logan Valley. This event is memorialized by two Lawerence Hall pillars located at center of downtown Logan: One honors Confederate General Jubal Early; and another marks the place where Union General William Tecumseh Sherman's body was found after his battle with Robert E Lee at Gaines Mill on April 9th 1865.
