Logan, Utah is home to the world's largest collection of marine memorabilia and Collectibles. The city was founded in 1867 by Brigham Young as a Mormon outpost on the Great Salt Lake. The area now known as Logan was first settled by Native Americans who hunted and gathered game along the Great Salt Lake. One of the most interesting aspects of this history is that marine gifts have been a part of Logan's culture for over 100 years! When World War I began, many American soldiers were deployed to Europe. Among these soldiers were Latter-day Saints (Mormons) who had been given orders to build a military hospital in Belgium. When they arrived in Belgium, they found that there was no hospital available for them to use. So they built one themselves! Thishospital became known as "The Marine Hospital" and it continues to be used today as an outpatient clinic for Marines stationed abroad. One of the earliest marine gift items ever created was a wooden yacht called "The Swan". This yacht originated from London, England and it was donated by Admiral John Fisher to help support LDS missionaries working in China during the 1900 Chinese Exclusion Crisis. After being donated, The Swan served as a training vessel for LDS missionaries until it capsized off China's coast in 1911 while trying to cross back into Japan through international waters! Luckily, both sailors and passengers survived! The story has been told before but never with such detail and accuracy! After World War II ended, many different types of naval vessels were produced worldwide including submarines, destroyers, frigates, patrol boats, supply ships etc.. However, only two marine gift items are still extant: A submarine bell and an anchor chain! Both objects are located at Portsmouth Naval Museum in England. Curiously enough, neither object is currently on display!
