It is part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. Logan was founded by Captain John C. Fremont on July 24, 1847 as Fort Bridger and named for Gen. James A. Logan who had been killed two years earlier while leading an expedition against the Navajo in Arizona Territory. At first it consisted of butte, or mountain peak, only accessible by horseback due to its steepness and difficult terrain; today it has a population of over 60,000 people and includes parts of both downtown and rural Logan Canyon areas extending eastward to Price Creek Valley.
