Lindon, Utah is a town in Davis County, Utah, United States. The population was 681 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ogden–Clearfield, UT-ID Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lindon was founded by settlers in 1851 as an Indian settlement on the edge of what is now Weber County. In 1863, the U.S. military established Fort Bridger here and began trading with Native Americans and selling goods to them from what is now Weber County. In 1865, Brigham Young designated Lindon as the temporary capital of new Deseret Territory after his return from Utah Expedition No. 8 (1847-48). In 1887, Lindon became a city when it was incorporated as a result of an Act of Congress occasioned by the discovery of oil in nearby Carbonear Basin shale fields. The first mayor was Wm Halsey Knight; he served for one year before being replaced by Horace Mann Morton who served until 1893 when he resigned to become City Manager for Ogden Valley Railroad Company which had been organized into a city corporation that year. On January 1, 1908, Lindon became an independent city under laws adopted on December 10th that same year. The annexation of Carbonear Township followed on July 15th 1909 and finally Mesa Village on November 5th 1912 due to its location adjacent to carbonear shales and other potential business sites within minutes' walking distance of downtown Lindon! Lindon was founded in 1887 by John W. Lindon and his wife, Emma. The Lindons were the first permanent settlers in the area and started a small grocery store on the corner of south First Street and Prospect Avenue. In 1890, they built a house on what is now east Second Street. They continued to operate their store until 1911 when they moved to their current location on east Second Street. In 1922, the Lindons donated land for a school which became known as Lindon Elementary School. The school closed in 1984 but was reopened as an art museum in 1990.
