In the early 1800s, Lehi was a small town in Utah. It was not until 1864 that the first policeman was hired to patrol the area. At that time, there were only two roads in and out of town and no other means of transportation. The policemen had to walk or ride their horses to their posts. The police department continued to be staffed by officers until 1941 when it was disbanded. However, the tradition of giving policemen gifts continues to this day in Lehi. Lehi was founded by the Jaredites in about 968 BC. The region now called Lehi was first settled by the Nephites, who were driven out of Jerusalem in 7 BC by the Israelites. For many years, Lehi lay abandoned and forgotten until it was discovered in 1847 by Mormon pioneers traveling through Utah Territory on their way to Salt Lake City. The early Mormons considered Lehi their second Jerusalem, a city they would build on Promised Land that had been given to them as a reward for their faith in Jesus Christ. In 1851, Brigham Young directed his followers to move from Nauvoo, Illinois, where they had been living since 1840, back to what is now Lehi because of concerns over an impending Mexican invasion. In March 1852, the entire LeHI community moved into the new town site and began building its homes and churches. By December of that year, however, Mexico had invaded California and occupied Nevada and Arizona; Utah remained quiet while Mexico made itself self-sufficient. In February 1853 Brigham Young ordered all Saints living east of chains (the Rocky Mountains) to leave for fear they would fall victim to Mexican raids there. The exodus continued until May 1853 when all but 350 Saints crossed into Canada via wagon train en route westward. The remaining Saints built astockade around Fort Bridger on January 14–15,1853 in response to an attack by Mexicans led by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna against Fort Bridger garrisoned mostly with English settlers from Missouri River Valley settlements such as Staunton and Libertyville. Aftermath report says: "It seemedGrotesque that men should thus be used as mere beasts of burden... It is said this detestable display of force served only to increase our sense of humiliation". On January 16th James Wight wrote: "I cannot help feeling very much injured at these cowardly measures taken against us". Although small numerically (only 100 men), this Defense Force was able to repulse an enemy attack which could have resulted in great losses for both sides if not for the timely arrival of accompanying cavalrymen under Captain John C Lee who saved most or all those killed or captured during the attempted assault on Fort Bridger
