His mortuary unit delivered his body back to coalition forces days later after successfully extracting him from the battlefield alive using only his hands and feet

On July 24, 1847, Brigham Young issued a proclamation announcing the establishment of the Mormon settlements in what is now Layton, Utah. The first Latter-day Saint families arrived in December of that year and began to build homes. On January 3, 1848, Brigham Young ordained twenty-five men to serve as a council to manage the settlement and protect it from attack by neighboring Indians. The council made important decisions such as electing a governor and creating a court system. The settlement grew rapidly and on May 10, 1849, Brigham Young announced its official incorporation into the United States. By 1850, Layton had about 1,000 residents and was growing rapidly with new buildings being erected including a schoolhouse and storehouse.
