Kaysville is a small town located in Weber County, Utah. The population was 2,633 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Ogden-Clearfield, UT Metropolitan Statistical Area. Kaysville was founded by pioneers in 1847 and named after Capt. James Kays who was killed in an expedition against the Ute Tribe in 1846. The original settlers were farmers and their families who built log cabins near what is now downtown Kaysville to raise crops and pasture their horses and cattle. In 1925, when the area became a city, most of downtown was destroyed by a fire that started in a theater marquee on Main Street. A new building was erected on the site of the old courthouse which served as both city hall and jail until 1963 when it closed because of budget cuts. On December 12th, 2006, it reopened as part of the Salt Lake City Downtown Historic District with new exhibits about local history including pioneer life and culture as well as early mining operations
