The history of Hurricane, Utah can be traced back to the early 1800s. The first known reference to what is now Hurricane, Utah was in a journal written by Captain James K. Polk in 1851. At that time, the area was part of the Mexican territory of Arizona and was called San Bernardino de las Arenas. In 1852, President James K. Polk ordered Colonel George Armistead to establish a military post at Apache Pass on the border of Arizona and Mexico. The post was named for General John Custer who had died in battle two years earlier. In 1861, after the American Civil War ended, Congress created Navajo Nation and gave it authority to lay down its own boundaries within Indian Territory. As a result, Hurricane came under Navajo jurisdiction as well as Mexican territory which included much of what is now Utah and New Mexico today. In 1868-1869, while Governor Brigham Young led an expedition against Mono Lake, he passed through this area on his way northward. Upon his return trip across country via Salt Lake City to Council Bluffs townsite on March 24th (today’s Independence Day), he described what he found during his journey: “A fearful looking mountain range with wild horses grazing upon its summits; numerous small lakes surrounded by high mountains; several ranges of great hills visible from these lakes; there are not many trees or plants excepting some scattered around among the rocks…. It would seem that before long we should be upon our destination—the Promontory [of] Red Rock near Moab…” Although Mormon settlers were present in this area for centuries prior to Mormons coming into contact with Native Americans there is no record documenting any raids or attacks against Native Americans in this vicinity during this time period….. However following America’s admission into World War II residents began moving into hurricane due locations such as Red Rock Hot Springs which became popular tourist destinations due to their proximity to energy resources…….. Today much of what used to make up Hurricane have been destroyed by development interests….. Nevertheless it remains an interesting place name and one that locals still enjoy visiting
