Hurricane, Utah is a town in Cache County, Utah, United States. The population was 1,836 at the 2000 census. It lies on the eastern edge of Cache Valley and on the southern border of Snowfield County. The name is derived from "Hurlbut", an early Mormon settler. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Cache Valley was made by Samuel Hurlbut in 1824. He built a log cabin on the Powder River near present-day Hurricane, Utah. A year later he and his family moved to what is now Hurricane after being given land by Brigham Young for their Pioneer Company to settle. In 1850, Brigham Young appointed David Waddell as the first sheriff of Cache Valley after settlers refused to provide law enforcement services themselves. A post office called Hurricane was established in 1872, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1907. After hurricanes destroyed much ofCache Valley during that decade,President James Kapp assigned George Fetterman to survey and plat area around hurricane so that residents could rebuild with certainty that their homes would not be haunted by the disasters (Fetterman's report).
