Holladay is a town in Salt Lake County, Utah, United States. The population was 3,022 at the 2010 census. Holladay is home to Brigham Young University–Hawaii and Holladay College. The first permanent settler in what is now Holladay was David Ritchie in 1847. David's brother-in-law John Sorenson also settled here around this time. In 1851, pioneer George Stephenson founded the community of Provo on the site of present-day Holladay. In 1857, James Wadleigh built a sawmill and gristmill at what is now Ninth Street and Second Avenue in Holladay. This mill became the largest employer in the area and helped create a strong community spirit that continues to today. By 1860, there were over twenty families living in Holladay with businesses ranging from farms to stores to schools. In 1862, when Utah became an illegally annexation of Arizona by Congress under President Lincoln's Executive Order No. 1292, residents of Provo voted not to secede and remain within Utah instead adopting "Holladay as their new municipal center." The town continued growth until it had a population of 553 people when it incorporated as a city on February 14th, 1907 under Mayor Fenton Erikson with Atherton as its first mayoralty appointment In 1911 members of the LDS Church Relief Society organized Molokai Girls Primary School which opened its doors for students aged six weeks through grade twelve September 1st following the dedication ceremonies for Hinei Kawa'oloa High School located across First Avenue from Molokai Elementary School (now known as Millennium Charter Academy). As enrollment increased so did school expenses which led to an effort by Mayor Harry Wirthman (1924 – 1951) spearheaded by Vice Mayor Clyde Bogan (1945 – 1949)to secure state financial assistance towards building new classrooms/ compounds for Molokai Girls Primary School while still providing ample opportunities for students attending Hinei Kawa’oloa High School which had experienced significant overcrowding due to World War II military training activities at nearby Hickam Air Force Base including airmen who would later serve our country during Operation Overlord! On October 6th 1951 donors located throughout Salt Lake Valley contributed $10,000 towards construction of two brand new buildings that would bear their names: “Molokai Girls Primary Schools” on acres donated by Mrs .Lillie Murchison (later Mother Teresa) and her family; while adjacent “Hinei Kawa’oloa High School” served grades nine through twelve until finally closing its doors effective September 30th 2009 after more than seventy years!
