Highland, Utah is a small town located in the Wasatch Mountains of southern Utah. It is bordered by Cedar County to the east, Weber County to the west, and Sanpete County to the north. The population was 1,752 as of the 2010 census. The first permanent residents of Highland were Mormon pioneers who arrived in 1847. They built a log cabin on high ground near present-day Tudor Lake. In 1854, they established a school and started trading with nearby towns. By 1860, they had developed a mill and began producing flour for other settlements in the area. In 1872, an act was passed making Highland a city and giving it its own government. On July 15 of that year, citizens voted to name their town Highland after General George A. Smith (1825-1907), who had played an important role in leading America into World War I and later served as governor of Utah Territory (1912-1920). The city grew rapidly during its early years; by 1880 it had over 2,000 residents. However, during World War II most of the housing stock was destroyed in an air raid; as a result, only about 350 people remain today within the limits of what once constituted Highland City Limits. Today Highlands is home to many businesses including three banks: The First National Bank Of Commerce & Trust Company ( founded 1913 ), Rocky Mountain Life Insurance Company (founded 1922 ), and United States Trust Corporation (established 1923 ). There are also several churches including The Presbyterian Church And Reformed Seminary Of Utah (established 1924 ); Methodist Episcopal Churches United In Christ And Our Savior’s Lutheran Parish #2 Of Logan Valley(established 1941 ); Baptist Churches In Northern Arizona(founded 1951 ); American Orthodox ChristianChurch USA Inc.(established 1961 ); Assemblies Of God church(established 1969 ); Latter Day Saints church(established 1974 ).

Highland is located on the east side of Layton and is bordered by Davis County to the north, Cache Valley to the east, Weber County to the south, and Adams County to the west. The town began as a small ranching community in 1875 and has since become an agricultural center with a large sheep and cattle herd. Highland also has a number of commercial interests including two grocery stores, four banks and two car rentals companies. In addition to its cultural attractions, Highland is home to severalak schools including South Jordan High School that serves students from grades 9-12; Highlands Elementary School which serves students from kindergarten through sixth grade; and Ridgecrest Junior/Senior High School which offers high school classes from ninth through 12th grade.
The first people to live in Highland, Utah were the Dalles Paiute. The Dalles Paiute arrived in 1847 and first settled on a tract of land that is now called the Highland Ranch. They built their homes using natural resources such as wood, earth, and stone. The Dalles Paiute also used the land for agriculture and hunted game. In 1871, the United States government bought the Highland Ranch from the Dalles Paiute. The government began to use it as a national reserve and set aside part of it for farmers. Today, parts of Highland are still owned by the government and used for farming purposes.
