Herriman, Utah is a town located in Iron County, Utah, United States. The population was 524 at the 2010 census. Herriman became a town in 1907 and was named for General George A. Herriman, who served as military governor of Utah from 1889 to 1892. The first white person to live in what is now Herriman Township was David Waddell in 1868. He built the first store there and started trading with Indians. In 1871, Colonel John Swayne founded the First National Bank in downtown Herriman and began issuing banknotes there. In 1886, Jethro Gibbs opened the first post office in what is now Herriman Township. The townsite was platted by James Henson on November 21, 1907. In 1912, the Works Progress Administration (WPA) leased land near present-day Jordan River Boulevard and Main Street to build a community called Cedar City which would serve as an important cultural center for Iron County and its people during World War I; however this project never came to fruition due to lack of financial support from Washington D.C.. Cedar City instead became known for its production of war munitions such as artillery shells and rockets used by America's allies during World War II. In 1948, President Harry Truman signed Executive Order 9477 creating the Herriman Indian School District No 1 along with all Indian school districts within 10 miles of Washington D.C.; this order allowed Native American children living on reservations outside of Oklahoma (and also within 100 miles of Washington D.C.) to attend schools operated by the US government under tribal auspices. During World War II Japanese citizens were interned at Fort Sumner east of Salt Lake City; many Jewish individuals including her husband Chaim Weizmann moved into their home at 620 West 4th Avenue soon after Pearl Harbor when hostilities began on December 7th 1941.
