In the early 1800s, there was no army stationed in Herriman, Utah. The first military units were organized in 1851 when a detachment of soldiers from Brigham Young’s army arrived to help with the Mexican-American War. However, not much happened until 1862 when General Zachary Taylor’s Army of the West crossed the Great Salt Lake and moved into present-day Utah. In 1865, General Order No. 11 called for all men within three miles of Fort Bridger to form ranches and provide defense against Native Americans. This order saw the town develop as a garrison town with military barracks, stores, and homes being built. With Fort Bridger established as a center for troop movements in centralUtah Territory, various gift programs were put into place to commemorate this event. These programs included donated horses, mules, rifles, gunspowder plants and tents; also awarded medals and badges to local citizens who contributed items or services to the soldiers or their families during their stay in Herriman. A particularly notable gift program was that which was given by Mrs. Jeraldine Bigham in 1954 to recognize her husband Colonel John A.] Bigham’s service with distinction during World War II as an officer on the U.S.-Mexico border patrol force known as “The Coyote Patrol” During his time serving in this unit he received numerous awards including two Silver Stars (the first ever given out for heroism), four Bronze Stars (the third highest award given out for bravery), four Purple Hearts (the second highest award given out for battlefield injuries), and three Distinguished Service Medals (). Additionally his unit earned six Battle Stars (), five Good Conduct Medals (), one Presidential Unit Citation (), one Legion of Merit () and one Veterans’ Cross (). Today Colonel Bigham is still a long-standing member of The Coyote Patrol team active today along side his wife Mrs .Jeraldine Bigham

Herriman, Utah is a small town in the Wasatch Range of the Rocky Mountains. The population was 5,636 at the 2010 census. It is located in Kane County. The town straddles the Utah- Mexico border and shares a landborder with Chihuahua, Mexico. The first permanent settler in Herriman was George Waggoner, who arrived in 1847. By 1860, there were 8 families living in the town. In 1865, John Hanks founded an agricultural colony called "Hanks's Hope", which became Herriman after him. In 1868, Brigham Young appointed George Atherton as Second Counselor to the LDS Church in Nauvoo, Illinois; Atherton had been sent by LDS President David O. McKay to explore possible sites for a new church headquarters east of Salt Lake City and he recommended Herriman as one of them. In 1870–71 Czar Nicholas II of Russia paid $5,000 to purchase 640 acres (240 hectares) near Herriman from three men who had offered it: James Shepley (owner), Robert Stockton (creator of Mormon Battalion), and John Wigglesworth (founder of Toole’s Store). Within two years after acquiring this property ($25 per acre), Shepley had built a sawmill on it that supplied lumber for local buildings and churches throughout Utah during pioneer times. Soon afterwards other settlers began arriving from various parts of Great Britain and Ireland—most notably Michael Settle—to join Shepley in building what would become known as "Utah's First Home". Notwithstanding its isolated location within hostile Mexican territory at that time—effectively an open season for robbery by Frontiersmen along both borders—the community rapidly grew into one of Mormon Zion's most consecutive boomtowns during these early days following
