Farmington, Utah is located on the Great Salt Lake and has been a major naval base since the 1860s. The city was created in 1847 when the U.S. Navy built a fort here to protect the Utah Territory from Mexican incursions. The navy left in 1865, but continued to use Farmington as a naval air station until 1929. In 1941, during World War II, Naval Air Station Farmington became one of three main naval air stations in the Pacific Northwest. After the war, NAS Farmington played an important role in developing helicopter technology and providing support for military operations in Southeast Asia and Central America. Thebase closed its doors in 1987, but it remained an important part of local defense until 2000 when it was sold to private developers and remains inactive today. U.S.-Mexico relations were tense during much of both world wars; however, after World War II NAS Farmington played an important role by helping develop helicopters forOperation "Torch" which helped liberated Burma from Japanese occupation (1942-1945). Helicopter technology developed at NAS Farmington allowed for Operation "Mulligan" which targeted Japanese forces retreating through Thailand into South East Asia ( 1945-1948). On June 7, 1948, Topeka Municipal Airport was opened and it served as the airport for Farmington until May 15th of that year when they leased runway 6 to Grand Valley State University which then served as the primary airport serving downtown before leasing runway 9 to Sky Harbor Airlines which closed down on December 5th 2009.
