Farmington, Utah is a city in Davis County, Utah, United States. The population was 621 at the 2010 census. Farmington was founded in 1863 by Mormon settlers from Palmyra, New York. It became a consolidated city in 1907 and annexed the towns of Springville and West Valley City in 1959. The current name of the city comes from the first settler to arrive in what is today Farmington: George Washington Smith. He named his new home "Farmington" after the town he had just left behind and which he thought would be a good place to start a new life because it was so isolated from other settlements and people. The early settlers were Methodists who arrived in 1849 from Palmyra, New York. They built their first homes on the site of present-day Farmington east of downtown. By 1860, about forty families had settled here and started a small grocery business called The Pioneer Store. The Panic of 1873 caused a large number of Mormons to flee Brigham Young's Utah Territory for Idaho or Nebraska where they could find more affordable land prices and easier access to food markets Outside of Utah; however, many members of the First Presidency remained behind and continued work on temple construction within Nauvoo while also running their farm businesses which led to growth in Nauvoo's agricultural sector during this time frame as well as growth in neighboring communities such as Springville and West Valley City that adopted similar policies towards agriculture during this time period with limited success due to lack of resources at that time
