The navy has a long and proud history in Utah. The Eagle Mountain Naval Base, now the Utah Army National Guard's Fort Hood National Military Park, is host to one of the largest naval installations in the nation. The base was founded in 1893 as the United States Navy's first station on the Great Salt Lake. It grew rapidly during World War I with an expansion that added a battleship, eight submarines, and four torpedo boats. In 1940, Naval Air Station Page became USS Enterprise NAS at Eagle Mountain and was home to America's first jet-powered aircraft carrier squadron. The post-World War II growth of Eagle Mountain Naval Base continued until 1973 when it merged with Naval Mine Warfare Center Pacific (NMWC) to form NMWC-Eagle Mountain which remains today one of the most important naval commands in the Western Hemisphere. At NMWC-Eagle Mountain we developed world leading mine warfare technology including surface minesweepers, torpedoes, unmanned underwater systems (UUAS), sonar systems and mine resistant vessels (MRVs). This large engineering complex continues to play an important role in Navy operations around the world today. In 1978 USS Constitution Museum Shipyards began construction on USS Constitution MuseumShipyard Museum which will be located adjacent to NMWC-Eagle Mountain on Fort Hood Road across from LDS Temple Square. The museum is open every day except Christmas from Memorial Day through Labor Day and will feature reproductions of all 726 guns from Constitution Museum Shipyards' collection as well as artifacts related to American naval history from 1775 through 1945.
