Eagle Mountain is an unincorporated community in Morgan County, Utah, United States. It lies along the Wasatch Front on the eastern edge of Big Cottonwood Canyon, about east of Park City. The post office was established at Eagle Mountain on October 3, 1907, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1950. At the time of its closure, it had a population of six residents. The first settlers to arrive in Eagle Mountain were prospectors from Colorado who traveled up the Wasatch Front in search of coal and natural resources. After finding none available they returned home on horseback and wagon. On December 10, 1875, a group of thirteen men including three Mormons journeyed into Big Cottonwood Canyon and located a small settlement called Echo which they named Zion after Mount Zion south of Park City. arrived near Echo on December 11th with horses and mules laden with supplies for their new settlement which would become Eagle Mountain. The men built a campfire that winter to cook their meals over an open fire before going off into the canyon to prospect for coal and other resources that winter. In 1907, when the post office was opened at Eagle mountain there were six residents living hereabouts: four womenfolk who cooked food for everyone during winter months (and did any gardening or house cleaning), two Brothers who ran a store out of their rooming house while also working as cowboys (and doing odd jobs around town), one man who did some farming while also working as a cowboy; all were Latter Day Saint immigrants from Utah’s Beaver Valley region just north of Logan River where most people belonged to The Church Of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). In 1951 when Eagle mountain closed its doors due to lack of mail service being provided by nearby Park City – then known as Cedar City – most locals moved away creating what is now only remnant population today numbering about thirty seven people all within walking distance from each other making life very difficult indeed… back then “the way things are” you pretty much either lived outside city limits or inside army barracks which meant no shopping opportunities whatsoever so gifts for your fellow troops were something you pretty much had to get your hands on!
