Draper was founded in 1847 by Daniel Draper and his wife, Emma. The town was named after David Draper, a pioneer settler who had come to the area in 1825. The first permanent residents of Draper were families from eastern Utah who moved to the area during the early years of the Mormon Settlement movement. In 1850, John Sutter arrived in what is now Salt Lake City and began trading with the Indians. This increased trade led to settlement of the area by other pioneers, which further stimulated growth of the town. By 1861, there were over 1,000 people living in Draper. In 1865, Brigham Young organized an LDS Battalion and sent men westward for military service under General George Custer. One of these soldiers was Daniel Draper, who served as captain in this battalion. By 1870, Draper had become a thriving town with a population of 3-4 thousand people. However, due to violence and sporadic epidemics that struck the community at various times throughout its history (e.g., cholera), its population dropped below 200 until it hit its current low level around 2005-2006 when it stabilized around 300 people
