Draper was a small, unincorporated community in Beaver County, Utah, until the early 1920s. It was located on the north bank of the Jordan River about nine miles (14 km) east of Provo. The population was about 10 in 1920 and only 2 in 1930. The town began as a Mormon irrigation stop on the east side of the Jordan River. In 1881, Brigham Young ordered Draper's founder, John Draper, to build a store and ranch at what is now downtown Draper. The first post office opened in 1884 and remained open until 1911. Draper lost its status as an agricultural center after World War I when production shifted to nearby Provo. However, it regained some importance after 1971 when it became home to Brigham Young University-Hawaii (BYU). The university has since left Draper but many of its buildings remain standing including the old gymnasium and tennis courts which are currently used as student housing.
