On July 4, 1876, the Cottonwood Heights Union Church was dedicated. The church was used as a military hospital from 1879 to 1886. In 1898, the army deployed gifts for Christmas and New Year’s in Cottonwood Heights Military Cemetery. From 1903 to 1915, soldiers donated food and clothing to the church during World War I. In 1951, the army deployed presents for Christmas at Cottonwood Heights Cadet Chapel. Since then, the army has sent gifts more times than any other holiday! In recent years, there has been an increase of people visiting Cottonwood Heights Military Cemetery to visit those who have died in service to our country. It is amazing that through all these years of giving back, we have been able to keep this place clean and organized so that loved ones can be buried with dignity and respect. We are grateful for all of the donations made by our military members over time and we hope that they will continue to do so in future seasons!

The Cottonwood Heights neighborhood of Utah is a well-known community for its history and architecture. The area was first settled in the early 1800s by Mormons, who named it Cottonwood Heights after the cottonwoods that grew near their farmstead. In 1868, the LDS Church built a temple in the area and the neighborhood became known as Mormon Hill. In 1916, Salt Lake City annexed Cottonwood Heights and many of its residents followed the city’s annexation process. Over time, growth in Cottonwood Heights led to increased housing prices andaulments becoming available on higher streets such as Olive View Drive. Today, Cottonwood Heights is one of Utah’s most popular neighborhoods with tightknit communities that are proud of their history and architecture.
The Cottonwood Heights area was laid out in 1875 by John F. Smith, a Mormon who had come to the Salt Lake Valley from Pennsylvania. The name of the settlement was chosen after Cottonwood Creek, which flows through the area. The first permanent settler in Cottonwood Heights was Simeon Wightman, who arrived in 1876. By 1880, there were nine families living in Cottonwood Heights. In 1902, Tom Perry began operations of the Utah Central Railroad through Cottonwood Heights and other areas of Utah. Perry's railroad helped increase commerce and agricultural production in the valley and contributed to population growth throughout Utah during this time period. In 1907, a school building was built at Cottonwood Heights for children attending neighboring schools in Provo or Cedar City. By 1915, cottonwoods had become an important tree resource in the region and more than half of all cotton grown within 100 miles of Salt Lake City was produced along the Arkansas River corridor near Cottonwood Heights. During World War I, many American soldiers stationed inside Utah were processed at nearby Garnet Junction Army Airfield; as a result, cottonwoods became an importantelementintheairforce supply chain throughout much of southern Utah during that time period. In 1948, Brigham Young University opened its first campus outside of Des Moines, Iowa; as a result, Cottonwood Heights became one of only a few villages located within reachofBYU students during that time period. In 1984-1985 (during what is now known as "CottonWOOD HEIGHTS YEAR"), community members rallied around plans to install new sidewalks and streetlights on Main Street in order to improve pedestrian safety conditions in the village center; unfortunately these projects did not fruition due to financial difficulties experienced by residents during that time period
