Clearfield is a city in Clearfield County, Utah, United States. The population was 7,813 at the 2010 census. Clearfield is part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. Clearfield was founded in 1847 by Latter-day Saints as a farming town on the Wasatch Plateau north of Mormon Village. It was named for Caleb ClearFIELD, one of Seventy-sixth LDS Church members to travel westward and preach to Native Americans near what is now Provo, Utah. The first post office in Clearfield opened in 1851. In 1869 Clearfield became the site of an LDS Temple; construction began two years later and was completed in 1871. In 1926 Clearfield erected its first school building; it replaced a frame structure that had been used since 1837. By 1930 the population had grown to over 10,000 and by 1960 it had reached 20,000 people. The growth of Clearfields downtown business district has caused several challenges for planners including limited parking spaces and tight streetscape constraints which have resulted in many high-end restaurants clustering around large shopping malls across downtown intersections (such as Main Street/University crossed with State Street). Despite these challenges, DowntownClearfield has seen rapid growth over recent decades thanks to a mix of new retail development (including anchor stores like Macy’s and Sears) as well as renovations and additions to existing businesses such as Artisan Pizza & Brewing Company (now Pizzeria Mozza), Brookside Brewery (now Brewery Vivaldi), Zinfandel wines store & tasting room (nowredeveloped into Liquor Barn),and dozens of small businesses that have been able to thrive due to access to Interstate 15 or short distance transportation options nearby such as US Highway 84 or I-15 exit 136A which runs just east of downtown along Center Street redevelopment evergreening properties between Main Street/University Avenue intersection and I-15 exit 137A adjacent First National Bank property on University Avenue
