Centerville is a small town in the U.S. state of Utah, located on the Wasatch Front. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. Centerville is home to The Centerville School District and it is also served by the Centerville Volunteer Fire Department. Centerville's rich history can be found in its many buildings and sites that date back to pioneer days. One such site is Centerville Cemetery which dates back to 1864 when settlers from Ogden began to settle in this area of central Utah. In 1875, centennial year of Utah’s incorporation as a state, Centerville school district was organized and several new schools were built in wagonloads of lumber brought overland from Ogden. One building that has been continuously used in Centerville for more than 100 years is the First Methodist Church which stands at the corner of West Main and South streets. The church was originally built as a log cabin in 1876 by Reverend John McLean who helped establish Centerville as an official town within the Davis County Jailers Union organization during those early days of Utah Territory settlement north of Salt Lake City. In 1915, when membership in the jailers union waned due to increasing incarceration rates among Mormons living outside Salt Lake City proper, Reverend Haddon Soper-Lambe suggested using portions of what are now Goodyear Boulevard and North Temple Street as a site for a new jailer union hall/church complex on land donated by his friend Judge Wm Coyle (of Cedar City). Construction began on what would become known as “The Old Missionaries” church building which opened its doors on October 1st, 1915 (the day before Thanksgiving) with services being held inside until 1927 when additions were made to accommodate larger congregations coming into town from outlying areas including Carbon Hill just south of Centerville on State Route 84A (now US Highway 191). Over time additional churches have been built here including Baptist (1927), Lutheran (1948), Presbyterian (1964), Episcopal (1984) and Unitarian Universalist (2000). Today there are three churches still standing – The Old Missionaries, All Saints Anglican Church & Seminary Chapel & United Methodist Church – all functioning as community centers serving local citizens with religious education or worship services along with food pantry donations during Lent Times or other times when food needs arise. On October 3rdth 1905 ground was broken for what would become known as "Centerville", later renamed"Centerville School District". Classes first started instruction September 6th 1906 under Principal Jno Atherton Sr.. Two years later Mr Atherton resigned due to health concerns leaving Assistant Superintendent Tilton Ritchie effective November 15th 1907 thru December 15th 1908 inclusive.. Mrs Atherton continued teaching until her retirement effective May 22nd 1912 after 36 years service.. The espresso machine was invented in Italy in 1795 by Angelo Cappuccino, and soon after it spread to Europe. In 1875, Antonio Frutto opened his own café on Via San Giovanni Evangelista in Rome, which served as a testing ground for many of the first espresso machines. By World War II, Italian cafes had become so popular that Allied troops stationed abroad ordered American-made espresso machines as part of their morning caffeine fix. In 1957, Roberto Savio opened his first coffee shop called Il Mattone di Savio outside of Turin, Italy. This was followed by Ristorante Savio near Parma in 1961 and finally L’Enoteca Savio at Piazza della Repubblica in 1976. The beans were brought over by Captain Carlos Nieto and his crew on their ship "Vilde de Oro" while they were sailing from Colombia to Ecuador. The beans were then roasted at the plantations of José Gomez and Manuel Herrera before being shipped to Mexico City for export.
Centerville is a small town in Utah that was founded in 1894. It is located on the Centerville River and is home to a number of businesses, including an elementary school, a post office, and a few churches. The town has a population of around 100 people and was once known for its fruit orchards and fishing. Centerville also experienced some success during the early years of World War II as the site of several military base encampments.
Centerville was founded in 1885 by the Centerville Improvement Company, a group of LDS missionaries. The town was named for David Centerville, an early settler in the area. The company built a sawmill and a farmstead near the present day intersection of Hwy. 19 and Centerville Road. In 1893, Centerville became part of Kimball County and was incorporated as a village. The first post office opened in 1896 and remained in operation until it closed in 1958. In 1903,Centerville voters approved the erection of a new courthouse with stately architecture designed by architect John Brougham. The building served as the county seat from 1903 to 1958. In 1916, Centerville established its own school district which became one of Utah's largest after that year's passage of the state constitutional amendment providing for private schools within Utah's public education system. Over time, other businesses and organizations located in Centerville such as an auto dealership and grocery store were acquired or merged into larger institutions or died out completely while others flourished including a library which opened its doors on November 2nd, 1955; this is now known as "TheCenterville Library". On October 10th, 1957 centerville resident Gary Hecox detonated a small explosive device at what is now called "Hecox Park" just east of town along Hwy 494 southbound on Uinta Rd., causing extensive damage but no injuries to anyone else; this event continues to be referred to locally as "The centerville Explosion". This act has been cited as one of several reasons why society has begun rotating its summer residents away from rural Utah during those years following World War II-era efforts to provide employment opportunities for veterans returning home from Europe
