The Cedar City Naval Shipyard was founded in 1887 and has been manufacturing naval ships ever since. The shipyard is one of the oldest in Utah, and it still produces warships today. The first USS Cedar City was launched on September 15, 1887. It was built by the shipyard’s team of engineers and laborers. The USS Cedar City served in the Pacific War and played a critical role in that conflict. It was also impressive for its size and performance. After the War, the USS Cedar City underwent many modifications and expansions at the shipyard. In 1951, she became known as USS Yorktown (CV-4). She continued to serve in this capacity until her retirement in 1992. During her career, she earned several awards including being named a recipient of the Congressional Gold Medal. Today, there are still active Navy ships at Cedar City Naval Shipyard including USS Porter (DDG-71) which is currently docked at the yard; USS George H.W Bush (CG-7) which is temporarily docked at Ocala Air Force Base; and USS Mount Carmel (SSN-735) which is currently undergoing repairs at Proceedings Marine Park ashore in Indian Lake, Utah. Within weeks of their establishment, Mormons were preaching and baptizing new converts throughout eastern San Juan County - making it one of the most heavily Mormon counties in America at that time. Mormons were not content to remain isolated from other communities through prayer meetings and personal revelation only; they wanted to be part of something larger than themselves. So soon after their arrival here in Cedar City, they started developing commercial ventures including cattle ranching, grain milling (the first such operation west of the Rockies), banking/finance operations (including creating what is now Salt Lake Valley Bank), trade shops (including one which served as both a post office and general store), schools (including one operated by local pioneers who helped found CedarCity) - all while still proselytizing among locals to spread their faith beyond their own families and friends back east.
