Cedar City, Utah is a small city in Kane County, Utah. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. Cedar City is located on the Wasatch Front, about halfway between Salt Lake City and Ogden. Cedar City was founded in 1869 by cattlemen from Iowa who named it "Cedar Point". The city was incorporated in 1903. The history of Cedar City begins with the purchase of 640 acres (250 hectares) east of present-day CedarCity by John D. Rockefeller in 1868 for $10,000. He donated the land to the town for use as a grazing ground and passenger depot on his ranch Cimarron near Logan, Utah. In 1870–71, when Brigham Young organized the Mormon Battalion and left Provo for Springdale to campaign against Mexico's forces occupying California, he sent several members of his army to Cedar Point to buy supplies and horses before returning home to lead LDS settlers back intoUtah Territory. In 1871–72 George Wistar became pastor of First Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) in Cedar City after serving as an apostle during Joseph Smith's brief presidency in that year. At first Wistar rented space north of First Church but soon built his own building which remains today as one of downtown CedarCity's most iconic landmarks: Wistar Hall (now called Quorum House). Wistar also founded what is now known as The Western Hills School District. In 1902, Joseph Fenton became president of Deseret Organizing Company which had been established two years earlier by David Oremstead with the goal of establishing a railroad through central Utah from Leadville through Provo and Park Valley to Sandy and Ogden. After purchasing some additional land from Rockefeller's estate for $5 million dollars ($100 million current value), Fenton constructed everything needed including a main train station within town limits; today known as Fenton Station Square. During World War II much activity took place at Fenton Station Square where over 1 million pounds (500 tonnes) worth of munitions were manufactured including components for B-29s used during the war effort; this production continued until 1948 when all operations were transferred to nearby Kearney Arsenal Ammunition Plant due to wartime restrictions on armaments production
