Cedar City is a city in Utah, United States. It was founded in 1847 by pioneers of the LDS Church. Cedar City is part of the Cedar Rapids, Iowa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 113,545 at the 2010 census. It is located in Davis County on the east side of Cedar Mesa Reservoir. The first settlers to what would become Cedar City were Methodist missionaries sent by the church to evangelize and convert Native Americans who dwelt near present-day Cedar Mesa Lake and on other nearby hillsides. On January 12, 1847, Brigham Young led a group of Latter-day Saints from Nauvoo, Illinois through Iowa into southern Minnesota Territory where they established a temporary settlement at Peoria Township in Crawford County on February 6th under the leadership of Elder David Whitmer. Soon after this their new settlement became known as "Cedar City". In December 1847 Orson Hyde announced that he had discovered gold near Pine Bluff, Arkansas; prospectors flocked to his claim and soon enough many families began moving into Cedar City to start anew life within this new land. In early 1850 $10 worth of gold nuggets were found at Gold Hill northeast of town while still others came up with claims throughout much of Davis County but it wasn't until November 1st when Brigham Young convened a meeting at which he directed all residents southward along Garnet Creek for safety's sake until further notice should an open field be discovered suitable for agricultural purposes which never happened because no such field existed anywhere near town limits then or anyplace since...thus giving birth tothis name “Cedar Rapids” something that only originated about 100 years ago today!
