The Cedar City Air Force Base is home to the Utah Division of Military Intelligence (UDMI) and its Detachment 3.1, which is responsible for providing intelligence support to the Utah National Guard. The UDMI detachment also operates a Joint Surveillance radar system (JSSR) in Cedar City, which was first used by the United States in Vietnam. The JSSR was designed as an airborne listening post capable of detecting aircraft over Vietnamese airspace and providing early warning information to military units on the ground. On November 14, 1951, General Curtis LeMay ordered the deployment of the 1st Tactical Air Command (1TAC) from Fairbanks AFB, Alaska for duty in Vietnam. In order to provide air cover for Operation Quang Ngai, 1TAC was deployed with three C-124 Globemaster IIIs and eleven A-4 Skyhawks from RAF Bentwaters AB, England. The 1TAC arrived at Bien Hoa Air Base in South Viet Nam on December 5 and began operations against North Vietnamese targets within 24 hours. In addition to their role as air assets support for ground troops fighting against communist forces throughout Southeast Asia, C-123s also played a critical role duringlift operations essentialtonumerous allied campaigns such as Operation Neptune's Spear and ?Operation Rolling Thunder.? For their contribution during these campaigns, several members of the USAF's 4th Bombardment Wing were awarded Distinguished Flying Crosses (DFC). Following its return from Vietnam service in May 1973*, Cedar City AFB again employed an aerial intelligence gathering squadron when it activatedDetachment 3.1A under command of Major General Leroy Wohlgemuth* (*Retired Colonel USAF*) . At this time Detachment 3.1 became responsible for supporting both UIGS programs at Ellington Field* (*Edwards AFB), Houston TX., as well as NORAD's ?Linebacker? program along with other counterintelligence activities.* On July 21st*, pursuant to General Order 404/1973* [*An Executive Order entitled "Organization and Structure of Military Forces"], DJTF 3E became operational with headquarters located at Cedar City AFB while detachments 2nd & 4th remained stationed at Ellington Field*. DJTF3E operated until October 15th when they relocated back to Cedar City after conducting worldwide exercises Thunderspire '75*(*Norwegian Exercise*) and Valiant Shield '76(*Austrian exercise). DJTF3E then transitioned into direct control from Headquarters UFCW when that organization redesignated itself Delta Force on January 1st 1980.*DJTF3E now functions solely as an airborne reconnaissance unit engagedin various missions flown under various nameplates including Freedom Eagle I& II*, Black Hawk I& II*, etc.*
