The first air force gift in Brigham City was given by then Major General George A. Smith in 1926. General Smith donated a painting of an F-4 Phantom jet fighter to be placed in the new Air Force Base at Spanish Fork. The base was later renamed as Fort Douglas Air Force Base after General Douglas MacArthur, who served as military governor of Utah during World War II. In 1949, Colonel Harry Vinson presented a set of four airplane parts to the city of Brigham City in memory of his father Lieutenant Colonel Harry Vinson, who had died while serving with the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. The airplane parts were auctioned off and went for $7,000 USD. In 1961, the city gave another air force gift when they presented three sets of aircraft wings to the local flying school which then became known as RAF Spanish Fork Airport Ltd.. Today RAF Spanish Fork Airport Ltd., is home to both Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and USAF rotary wing pilot training operations as well as providing maintenance services for several USAF aircraft based at nearby Whiteman AFB on Eagle Island. Since its inception, RAF Spanish Fork Airport Ltd.'s goal has always been to give back to their community by helping others through aviation donations or service provision such as runway repair and hangar construction/maintenance services; however no small task can compare with that of welcomingrafaeli airport into Confederation Community Services District (CCSD). The USAF gift history can be traced back to World War I when the United States entered into a Treaty of Versailles that gave rise to the AF. The AF was established on 1 November 1918 as part of the newly created National Defense League, a coalition of American businesses and bankers which also included the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The AF was initially equipped with Curtiss JN-4D Wildcat aircraft, but these were replaced by Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighters in 1948. During the Korean War, both USAF and North Korea enjoyed close cooperation with gifts being exchanged between both sides. This cooperation culminated in an exchange of MiG-15s and C-130 transports in June 1950. In Vietnam, gifts were again exchanged between US and South Vietnamese forces; this time however, it was not limited to technological assistance but also food and medical supplies. From 1951 until 1969, gifts were exchanged annually between USAF and Air Forces Europe (AAF Eisenhower). Additionally, during Harry S Truman’s presidency (1945-1953), he authorized the creation of the NASA space program which led to establishment of USAF Space Command on 18 May 1949. With regard to technology Gifts have been received from many different sources including commercial companies such as Boeing Company and GE Aircraft divisions along with military vehicles such as tanks and fighter jets. However one particular type of gift has consistently been received by the USAF: Aircraft Parts. It is believed that this type of gift has originated from Don Armstrong who purchased an FH-1B Tiger Moth for use by RAF Fighter Command in 1947 while stationed at RAF Oldenburg airbase Germany. subsequently he donated this aircraft part to RAF Museum England where it still hangs today as part of its collection
