Bountiful, Utah is a city in the Wasatch-Cache Valley region of Utah. The population was 46,611 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Garfield County. Bountiful began as a small settlement on the edge of The Promontory and grew rapidly due to its location near Leadville and its access to water resources. In 1872, residents of Bountiful petitioned for incorporation as a town and were given approval by the governor. The name "Bountiful" was chosen because it was abundant in fruit trees and other crops. The first post office in Bountiful opened on November 15, 1872, and served area until January 1, 1902. The first store in town was built at Fourth Avenue and Waco Road by James Hite. A second store was built on State Street in 1886 by Jeptha Sorenson. By 1900, there were six stores in town with a population of 2300 people. In 1907, local farmers began marketing acacia nuts which became known as "bounty nuts". This led to increased business for the town's commercial center which included four banks (the First National Bank building still stands), two grocery stores (The Gilded Cage grocery store and Zion's Drug Store), several residences (including what is now the LDS Temple complex), an opera house (opened in 1911) and three movie theaters: one showing Edison films; one showing Charlie Chaplin Keystone Kops; one showing Gone With the Wind . These businesses attracted workers from Carbon County who quarried limestone for churches, schools and other buildings in downtown Bountiful while settlers cleared land for farming around the new townsite . In 1951 Bountiful annexed part of Price Counties along with Cedar City making it Urban District #1 with a population of 382 citizens; this change followed years when both Cedar Cityand Price Countyselected their own mayors without obeying Salt Lake City mayoral regulations limiting annexation .
