Bountiful is a town in Utah, United States. The population was 1,059 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ogden-Clearfield, UT Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bountiful was founded in 1847 by Latter-day Saints pioneers and named for Provo, Utah's second largest city. The town sprang up around a small watercourse that flowed through present-day Bountiful and Clearfield counties from east to west. In 1847 Brigham Young sent his brother David Wirth to survey the area and found an open tract of land about six miles wide and three miles long on what is now Weber County. This tract became known as Wirth's Field because it belonged to Brigham Young's brother Uriah Wight. David Wirth organized the first store in Bountiful while he was surveying the area with his son John Cope; they opened their store on December 5, 1847. In 1850 James Mantle discovered coal seams near present-day Payson and began prospecting for coal in what would become Bountiful. By 1855 there were fifteen stores in the community with a population of 150 people; by 1860 there were twenty-four stores with a population of 350 people. Coal mining started soon after this, but production stopped due to strikes by miners unionists during the American Civil War (1861–1865). Although lack of resources ultimately led to economic decline for many towns throughout Utah after 1865, Bountiful persevered until 1870 when its post office closed due to competition from Cedar City. A new post office was established in 1870; it remained open until 1923 when it merged into that of Ogden City proper
