Bountiful, Utah is a small town in the Wasatch Mountains of southeastern Utah. The population was 1,814 at the 2000 census. It is located about 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Salt Lake City and 15 miles (24 km) northwest of Provo. The community was founded in 1847 by Brigham Young and his followers as a place to trade goods with the surrounding Mormon villages. In 1850, Bountiful became part of the LDS Church's second territorial district, which included all of present-day Utah. By 1862, the population had increased to 2,000 and Bountiful became an official town. In 1966, Bountiful began annexing neighboring communities, which has resulted in its current size of approximately 9 square miles (23 km²). The annexation has not stopped since then; Bountiful has annexed more than 20 settlements since 1986. Bountiful is home to many notable residents including Manya Benson who served as mayor from 1984 to 1990; Alvin Karczewski who was twice United States Senator from Utah from 1978-1981 and 1984-1988; Helene Cooperrider who was first lady of Utah from 1991-1993; Rufus Dillard II who played professional basketball for 12 seasons in the NBA; and Donny Boyd whose teams led the NBA in attendance for three consecutive years from 1992-1994.
