The community began as a small Mormon settlement on July 24, 1847 when three men named George W. Smith, Lyman Beecher and John Taylor arrived in wagon trains from Nauvoo in Illinois. In 1849 they founded a small town on what would become Bountiful Beachou near present-day Markham Road and Center Street. On October 9, 1850 LDS leaders designated this spot where today's Main Street meets US Highway 64 as the site of Zion College - one of only two colleges chartered by LDS church president Brigham Young to be located within UTAH Territory (the others were Provo Female Seminary and Deseret School). The first residents weredry goods merchants Jerald Richards and his wife Lucy Richards who opened their store on December 12th of that year. Bountiful, Utah is a small city in the United States state of Utah. The population was 7,851 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Tooele County and part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. Bountiful was laid out in 1847 by Brigham Young and named after his biblical land of Canaan. The first settler in what is now Bountiful was George Cranch, who arrived in 1847 from Illinois. He built a log cabin on the southeast corner of First Street and State Route 191 (now Main Street), which he named "Canaan". In 1850, John Wigglesworth arrived from England as an immigrant and started a flour mill on First Street. By 1860, there were twenty-four families living in Bountiful. In 1861, President Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order 10369 giving all citizens of Utah seven days to leave their homes or face martial law; this order caused many Latter-day Saints to flee to Colorado and Wyoming during the Civil War. Most permanent residents left before winter set in, but some returned after General Ulysses S. Grant's army crossed over the Great River Valley intoUtahin 1865. In 1865, Brigham Young recommended that Bountiful be renamed "Salt Lake City", but this proposal was not accepted by all Mormons because it would have been connected with downtown Salt Lake City rather than with their rural hometowns east of I-15 known as Midvale and Sandy Beach/. Eventually, "Salt Lake City" became just one word among several alternate names proposed for Bountiful over time: pioneer town (1867–68), agricultural center (1869–70), business district (1871–72), growth town (1901), shopping center (1904). Some early settlers had come to Utah specifically for mining opportunities; when gold was found at Mill Creek about five miles west of present day Bountiful on March 12, 1858 by prospector John Wesley Powell Jr., twelve men organized themselves into a company under leadership of Captain Samuel Latham called The Gentry Mines Company (). On October 15 they struck an initial claim west side creek bed where Cedar Hill stands today looking for rich veins; they quickly realized that there were no deposits worth exploiting so abandoned their efforts within two months (). They registered with the US Geological Survey on November 3rd under pro forma name The Republic Minerscoal & Gold Mining Company (). Five more claims were filed soon thereafter (), making it one large claim (). Several members purchased shares equaling $5 per share ()--the equivalent today--and formed another company called The Utah Coal & Iron Mining Company () because they could not find anyone else willing to invest capital in mining operations outside OfDoor County (). By February 14th they had developed 1 acre ($0.40 acres) worth $3 worth of coal and gold resource which generated enough power to light up Independence Hall even while snow lay siege inside! For these men success seemed certain; however things changed rapidly when transportation problems arose due largely to poor climate conditions (-20 degrees Celsius weather rating during winter) combined with overproduction resulting from cheap natural resources export prices skyrocketing due to American Civil War blockade). Finally able tomilk cow free through irrigation ditches without freeze/thaw cycles late fall/early winter 1868 – caught up short local merchants offered high quality ice cream made from milk raised northward along Wasatch Front Mountains instead including items likechocolate bars . . ."
