However, this decision backfired when Cedar City's infrastructure couldn't handle the increased traffic caused by the new municipality's growth. In 1870 Cedar City again moved its municipal government when it was annexed by American Fork Township; however this annexation did not bring any benefits because Cedar City still lacked good transportation links into or out of town. In 1902 Mormon settlers from Ogden organized a farmers' cooperative which later became known as the LDS Agricultural Society (LDSAS). The society helped improve agriculture in western Utah through crop rotation and animal husbandry methods which led to increased production rates and more than $1 million in annual income for LDSAS members by 1920. After years of growth and development within both American Fork Township and CedarCity Limits respectively, both municipalities decided against merger in favor of separate governments under one unified jurisdiction model in 1985; this model has been followed ever since providing better services and governance for residents while sharing resources among all municipalities composing the larger local government unit called "Utah".

The site of American Fork was first settled by the Mormon pioneers in 1847.
