The American Fork Naval Shipyard was established in 1922 as the first Naval Shipbuilding Center in Utah. The Navy's shipbuilding program continued at AFRK until 1971, when the facility was closed and moved to Pascagoula, Mississippi. In its place, the Navy created the Naval Air Warfare Station Fallon in 1976 and then NAS Fallon Joint Base hospital in 1987. The Naval Shipyard reopened in 1992 as a museum dedicated to naval ships and naval aviation. Today, NAS Fallon is home to two types of warships: amphibious assault ships (MARSOC) and mine warfare vessels (Littoral Combat Ships). MARSOC is designed for beach landings or air operations ashore; Littoral Combat Ships are designed for coastal waters and navies around the world. both type are equipped with torpedoes, missiles, bombs, rockets, Sea Sparrow surface-to-air missiles, Harpoon anti-submarine warfare torpedoes, Seahawk helicopters (AO-1s and OV-10s), sonar systems (LHDs/LHDAs), forward observers/control stations (FOTCS), lifeboats/lifejackets/ Life Savers/, explosive ordnance disposal teams (EOD teams), medical equipment including labs for performing surgery on animals or human patients from aboard an afloat target platform such as a destroyer or submarine; energy weapons systems; warships built by other nations also visit NAS Fallon for training purposes before entering service with their country's navy. American Fork, Utah was founded in 1847 by Mormon pioneers. The community is located in Kane County, Utah, and is part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. American Fork is a census-designated place (CDP) and has a population of 9,812 as of 2000. The history of American Fork begins with the construction of the first permanent settler home in 1847. There were already people living in what is now Kane County when Brigham Young and his followers arrived from Nauvoo, Illinois. They built a fort at American Fork for defense against Apache Indians and other Native Americans who had been attacking Mormon settlements throughout their course through Iowa, Missouri, Kansas Territory (later Kansas), Nebraska Territory (later Nebraska), Wyoming Territory (later Colorado), and Utah Territory. In 1850, Brigham Young directed his followers to move westward into what are now both Kane County and Eagle Valley—the area then known as Cedar Mesa—in order to proselytize among the local Native American nations. Over time, many others followed suit: settlers began moving into this new land from all over Great Britain, Scandinavia, Germany, Italyate America—and eventually Mexico itself during the early years of Mormonism.
