The Marine Corps has been in America Fork, UT since World War II. The Marines first arrived in the town during the Korean War as part of a troop deployment. In 1967, Marines were stationed at Red Hill Army Air Field when the U.S. Embassy was moved to America Fork. From there, Marines deployed to Ranger school and various other roles in the Utah garrison until their current location at Gold Base in 2004. The tradition of sending Marines gift history began during World War II when Guam native Walter Condon became the first Marine officer to be awarded an MOS (Military Occupation Specialty). After his discharge from service, Condon took up a position with Shell Oil Company where he met and married USMC wife Jeanette Keller. They then traveled throughout Asia before settling on Guam which they called home for six years while their son was born there. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941, President Franklin D Roosevelt ordered American forces into action and sent 1st Lt Condon to lead a unit of Marines eastward along the Japanese coast as part of Operation Neptune’s Spear which ended with naval victory over Japan at Leyte Gulf two days later. On returning to Guam following that campaign, First Lieutenant Condon found himself head of an expanded Marine detachment assigned to provide security for Guamanian vessels patrolling in waters off Samar Island as well as providing logistical support for General Douglas MacArthur’s landing on Luzon Island three weeks later during World War II’s largest amphibious assault ever conducted by United States forces against any theater of war – or so we thought! Less than 24 hours after carrier task groups USS Enterprise (CV-6) and USS Lexington (CV-4) had invaded Lingayen Gulf off Leyte Island early morning September 8th 1942 pursuant to Admiral Nimitz’s order “We Shall Overcome” only two ships remained west of us: Enterprise with her sister ship USS Astoria (AO-1) providing gunfire support while flagship Enterprise disembarked her embarked unit led by First Lieutenant John Wadleigh who piloted one engine aircraft carrier into Lingayen Gulf just past sunrise; Task Group 58.2 consisting of carriers Yorktown (CV-5), Coral Sea(CV-13), Kaneohe Bay(CVE-21), Midway(CVE-22), Shaffer(AGM-36)and Ensign Jens Oleson's PT boat Wildcats between them killed scores if not hundreds more Japanese soldiers trying unsuccessfully every day to break through our strong San Pedro Strait Defensible Line; meanwhile Task Group 64 comprising Lexington under Rear Admiral John Richardson failed dismally in its mission never penetrating 25 miles beyond Philippine Sea . Finally it must be noted here that despite all these difficulties Rear Admiral Richardson did succeed eventually within 2 days after Ipco report reached him that 20 suicide bombers had infiltrated our force making it virtually impossible for us now ashore even if tried without loss). This sorry state would continue until February 1945 when Vice Admiral Mahoney relieved Rear Admiral Richardson effective sunset January 15th 1945 aboard battleship New Orleans however Majestic still couldn't penetrate 25 miles due mainly because bad weather prevented large warships from reaching our positions very deep inside enemy territory] Condon continued working for Shell Oil company until 1951 when he transferred his services abroad once again becoming a professional marine driver/driver instructor before retiring from the military altogether in 1972 having served continuously since 1945!! Walter Condon's marines gift history continues today with UDT veteran Lance Corporal Jeremy Weiler who also retired from active duty last year having served 2 deployments totaling 5 months overseas including Iraq and Afghanistan! His gift is something special indeed as he sends back something unique each time such as personalized cards or inscribed bottles filled with local desert air! Each recipient loves getting their letter opened and finding out what their favorite marine did during their time spent serving!

In recent years, the Marines have also started to send gifts in celebration of victory or special occasions such as Christmas, New Year's and Veterans Day.
