American Fork was founded in 1847 by Latter-day Saints during their Mormon colony in what is now Weber County. American Fork has been an agricultural center for many years and is known for its fertile land and numerous waterfalls.
American Fork is a city in the U.S. state of Utah and the county seat of Kane County. The population was 51,924 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Kane County after Farmington and Orem. American Fork is located on the banks of the River Jordan near its confluence with the Blue Mountains. It is bordered to the north by Fishersville and to the east by Logan Heights. The first permanent European settlers in what is now American Fork were French Canadian missionaries who founded a mission there in 1825. The United States built Fort Bridger onsite in 1847 as part of theirmail route from Saint Louis to California. The fort served as an observation post for wagon trains travelling across land that would later become Utah Territory. In 1850, American Fork Township was organized, and soon afterwards saw growth thanks to connections made by Mormon leaders with members of other religious groups living in neighbouring townships such as Logan Heights and Orem. By 1860, American Fork had reached its current size with over 100 residents; it had also acquired a reputation for being one of the most Liberal cities within Utah’s boundaries – something which helped it gain respect from other nearby settlements which viewed it as too liberal for their tastes. In 1861, when Brigham Young announced his decision to move his people westward into what would become Colorado Territory (later called Nevada), many Americans Federalist Party officials felt compelled to follow him – including Mayor John Atherton of American Fork – despite intense dislike toward Mormons due to their belief that they were practicing polygamy (a practice considered illegal under British law). With no railroads available to transport goods or passengers long distances westward, Mormon pioneers began construction on what would be America's first true railroad – the Great Salt Lake Railway – starting in 1865.[1] Construction continued until 1868 when parts of central Utah were leased back to Indian Authorities following US annexation of Mexico during President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation (see Mexican War). During this time period, much significant development took place within American Fork including: establishment of Grays Mill; emergence of local banking institutions such as The National Bank;birthof schools like Holy Cross School and Washington Academy;andthe foundingof churches like First Presbyterian Church and Methodist Episcopal Church.[2]
