From 1949-1975, the Coast Guard District 2 headquartered in American Fork served as the Headquarters for the Coast Guard Station in American Fork. In 1975, the Headquarters moved to Ogden and the station became an operational facility of the newly created District 3 headquartered at Utah State University. In 2007, District 3 was merged with DISTRICT 4 which included American Fork and parts of neighbouring Weber County. The new district has responsibility for all United States coast guard stations within its jurisdiction including American Fork.
American Fork, Utah is a census-designated place located in northern Utah, United States. The population was 1,951 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ogden–Clearfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. American Fork began as a Mormon settlement in 1847 on the banks of the Blue River. The first post office was established in 1857 and named for John Fetterman, an early settler who was also responsible for building up the town's infrastructure. In 1865, Brigham Young sent his brother David to found what would become American Fork with some 735 Latter-day Saints from Illinois under the leadership of Orson Pratt. As railroad activity increased in Utah throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s, American Fork grew rapidly with its share of railroads reaching into every corner of the state by 1910. The LDS Church purchased land east of Provo across from Weber State College in 1922 to create Provo Layouts which include much older Mormon settlements such as Spanish Fork and Cottonwood Heights west of Main Street (now called University Boulevard). With increasing traffic on US Routes 191 and 84 near downtown Provo, American Fork needed more space so it built its own city hall on North Temple Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue in 1926-27 just northwest of downtown Provo's original core along First Avenue between Randolph Street and Seventh Street NW (the current location of BYU’s main campus). In 1932 local resident Wylie Copley founded Kays Valley Creamery which became one of America’s leading creamery brands until it closed operations in 1984 due to competition from national firms such as Kraft Foods Incorporated. A new commercial airport opened adjacent to Downtown Provo Airport in 1987 after years serving only general aviation use; however this airport has been mothballed since 2004 because passenger traffic has declined significantly over time. Because economic development around Downtown Provo has lagged behind that around other nearby communities, most significant construction projects have occurred outside Downtown Provo or within recent boundaries drawn by developer Topeka Capital Management Company LLC., including: three high-rise buildings at 421 N.[First] St., formerly known as "The Pyramid";[Second] One hundred acres north/northwest of I-15 exit 114;[Third] a major shopping center at 400 W.[First] St., now known as "CenturyLink Center."
