The American Fork Army Airfield was one of the most important airfields in Utah during World War II. It was used by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) and the United States Navy. The airfield was located in central Utah, about 30 miles west of Salt Lake City and 120 miles east of Denver. The USAAF built the airstrip in 1942 as a primary bombing and strafing ground for the Fifteenth Air Force. The airfield became operational in July 1943, when it became home to an RAF fighter squadron, No. 407 Squadron RAF. The squadron flew Liberator bombers from the airstrip until its disbandment in 1945. Inactivated on 1 September 1945, the airstrip was reactivated on 3 October 1949 as part of USAF establishment at Salt Lake City Airport as Joint Base Lindbergh-American Fork-Utah Beach-Everett AFB. It served concurrently as an active USAF base until it closed on 20 September 1959 following dissolution of the USAF. On 7 May 1960, American Fork Airport reopened under FAA control with general aviation operations being based there until 2 June 1965 when it absorbed former runway 4 atLindbergh Field into American Fork Municipal Airport which had been established just north of American Fork Army Airfield by that date. In 1969, airport status reverted back to military uses when Fort Wingate Military Academy moved from their previous location near Blanding Heights to use American Fork Municipal Airport south of I-15 rather than Lindbergh Field - this event is celebrated annually by flying stunts off I-15 over Blanding Heights).
