The name of the town was changed to Mormon City on November 1, 1889 after it was made an incorporated village by an act of Congress under the name "Mormon City." In 1911 Mormon settlers built a sawmill on Cedar Creek to provide lumber for their new city and milling continued until 1918 when production ceased because of World War I; however, mills continue operation to this day with some being converted into housing units. On October 6th 1915 Brigham Young organized The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) at Cedar Creek with headquarters located there until they moved to Salt Lake City in 1917 where they have been headquartered ever since.
