Alpine, Utah is a census-designated place in Summit County, Utah, United States. The population was 5,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. The name "Alpine" comes from the Spanish word for "snow peak." The first settlers in Alpine were men who had come overland from California in 1847. They built a cabin on the mountain and named it after their home state of New Mexico. Thereafter, many people moved to Alpine from all around Utah and neighboring states because of its amazing location: on top of a snowcapped peak that offers stunning views of the Southeastern US and most of Western Canada; close to major commercial centers like Salt Lake City, Provo, and Ogden; plus easy access to hiking trails that take you up to 12 miles (19 km) long. In 1912 Alpine became a community when some pioneers pooled their money and bought land together. They named it after General John Custer's Battle Birthday Party which took place there two years earlier that year. The town grew rapidly during World War II as people came to work in the coal mines and factories nearby. After the war ended, Alpine experienced another growth spurt with more people moving into the area because of new housing developments developed around it such as Alpine Meadows or Sunrise Ridge Estates. In recent years there has been an effort by residents to keep Alpine affordable by limiting development near downtown while preserving its natural resources including winegrowing hills above town square dating back to 1860 and timberlands east of I-15 that provide lumber for homes and businesses throughout Mountain View County

The U.S. Navy's first aircraft carrier, USS Lexington, was commissioned on October 16th, 1919. The USS Constitution was launched on December 12th, 1912 and served until 1933 when she was replaced by the USS George Washington (CV-27). In 1934 the U.S. Navy created its own submarine force with the issuance of submarineskins to submariners enlisted in the navy prior to World War II who were not drafted into military service as members of other services (e.g., Marines or Coast Guard). This unique tradition continued through World War II with submariners receiving submarineskins even after their ships had been decommissioned and sold to other navies. After World War II there were large changes within the navy as it transitioned from an all-male institution to a more diverse and open society under President Franklin D Roosevelt's New Deal program which included executive orders implementing Civilian Conservation Corps programs and creating race based quotas for various federal jobs that limited black hiring in some sectors of the U.S government while increasing white hiring throughout most aspects of American industry including banking, education and defense industries during this time period known as "The Great Society".
