Alpine is a small town located in Carbon County, Utah, United States. The population was 2,826 at the 2010 census. Alpine was founded in 1872 by George Fenton and his wife Florence. Today, Alpine is a bedroom community with a population of only 1,100 people and is home to the oldest continuously operating ski resort in the Rocky Mountains- Alpine Meadows Resort. The town's history can be traced back to 1872 when George Fenton and his wife Florence came to the area from Ogden City, Utah. At that time, there were no ski areas in these mountains so Fenton built Alpine Meadows Resort as one of first ski resorts in the Rocky Mountains. In 1935, John Muir visited Alpine and made an impact on its development by creating the idea for wilderness protection within the town limits. Today, much of what makes Alpine unique has been preserved through parkland designation and cultural heritage preservation initiatives such as its annual Christmas parade which features more than 120 floats along its route. One of the most significant aspects of Alpine's history is its role as a center for education within Carbon County. In 1865, Drury Coleman opened Academy Hill School (later renamed Mountain View High School) here which later became one of Carbondale’s largest educational institutions serving students from Carbon County until it closed in 1984. Other notable schools located here include Highland Park Elementary School (founded 1938), Springdale Middle/High School (1948), Cottonwood Heights Elementary School (1951), Aspen Ridge Intermediate/Junior High School (1957), West Valley Junior/Senior High School (1967), White Sands Intermediate/Junior High School (1969), and finally Anaconda Senior/Mature Center(1982). Alpine also played an important role during World War II as a hub for trade between Utah and Colorado Springs - primarily due to its location on US Highway 6 just north of Boulder Canyon National Recreation Area - helping support military efforts throughout the war effort. During this time period, Aluminum Company plant #1 arrived in nearby Carbondale while other factories produced munitions including Boeing Aircraft plants #2 & 3; Electric Boat plant #4; Hanna-Barbera company plant #5; Chrysler factory #6; General Motors assembly line #7; Ford engine plants No 4 & 7; Bethlehem Steel plants No 5 & 7 etc., allocating many jobs away from Salt Lake City in order to support military production throughout EuropeWWII
