Wylie, Texas is a small town in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,902 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Plano Metropolitan Statistical Area. Wylie began as an agricultural community in 1867. In 1907 it was named after Hyrum Wylie, a local banker and philanthropist. The name change came about because of the railroad that arrived in 1907 and changed the course of life for many people who lived near its tracks. The first post office opened in Wylie on May 12, 1908. The first store was built in 1909 by J.C. Beeson and his wife Lillie Beeson; it closed in 1944 when the present grocery store was built across the street. The first school was erected in 1911 by James Ransom and his wife Sarah Knox Ransom; it operated until 1918 when it became known as Old Hickory School No 2 due to new building construction adjacent to it which also included a school library). In 1928 Wylie had its own air raid shelter made out of plywood dating back to World War I with two rooms deep inside a converted munitions plant (now called "The Plant" on Main Street) that still stands today! It served as a temporary evacuation center for residents during WWII when other communities were bombed or attacked without warning (the shelter can be seen from Interstate 20 between Plano and Garland). In 1954 Wylie attained city status but retains its rural character with access only through one street (Old Hickory Boulevard) while most growth has taken place along Interstate 20 just outside of town limits including development of what once been an abandoned farmstead now home to several businesses including KFC restaurant and movie theaters as well as homes for developers such as Dallas developer Jerry Wexler Sr.; he plans to turn it into an upscale neighborhood complete with tennis courts, dog parks, luxury apartments etc.).
