In 1602–3 another expedition set out from Mexico City with similar objectives but ended up aborting due to bad weather conditions near present-day San Antonio Creek. It wasn’t until 1606 that any permanent English settlement appeared in centralTexas when Captain John Smith landed at Velasco on Long Island as part of his ill-fated voyage across America back in 1492! At first glance, White Settlement may have looked like nothing more than a series of hastily constructed buildings set among scrubby trees – but these men were pioneers nonetheless. They were determined not just to arrivein what would become today’s Texas but also create something new here: a thriving community where people could live free from fear or persecution? In 1836, the Mexican government ceded Texas to the United States. The area now known as Texas was sparsely populated and mostly ranchland. The first white settlers in what is now Texas were Anglo-Saxon farmers who arrived by wagon train in the 1840s. By 1850, there were about 10,000 Anglo-Americans living in what is now Texas. The Anglos gradually increased their numbers as they acquired land and began to build homes and businesses. In 1857, a group of Englishmen led byCaptain John Clements purchased 1,200 acres of land near present day Austin from the Texan state government for $10 per acre. This purchase set off a chain of events that led to the creation of Austin as an independent city on July 6, 1867. The arrival of large numbers of immigrants – primarily Irish Catholics – during the late 1800s created tension between Anglos and Hispanics. In 1901, a bill was passed Congress making it illegal for any person not already U.S.-born to serve on municipal or school boards (except for jurors). As a result, many Spanish-speaking Texans became municipals or school board members without having been naturalized citizens or having voted in American elections. This situation changed with passage of Proposition 8 in 2008 which legalized gay marriage nationwide
