West University Place is a small town in Cameron County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The town has a main street and two parks named after Confederate General Pemberton and Ulysses S. Grant, respectively. The first settler in what is now West University Place was James Hogg Sr., who arrived in 1836. He built a cabin on the present site of Main Street in 1837. In 1840, Hogg's son John founded the first school in what is now West University Place, which he called "Hogg's Academy." In 1845, Hogg's daughter Sophronia donated land to build an academy for girls also known as "West University Place Female Seminary". In 1865, John Hogg Jr.'s widow Marilla gifted additional land for a public school system that would serve all of Cameron County. On July 1, 1875 (the date that Texas became a state), West University Place became its own municipality with authority over its own police department and fire department! In 1907–08 Mrs. Burton Fenton erected the first frame building in what is now Main Street – she also served as its first mayor/chief executive officer and continues to be honorary mayor today while living on Long Ridge Road off FM 727 south of town). That same year saw the opening of Waco Junior College by Mrs. Fenton and other citizens of WestUniversityPlace; it continues to provide education opportunities for locals and visitors alike to this day! On December 14th 1912 local teenager Roy White went into self-imposed isolation on rancho Seco near Mount Pleasant due to his declining health; he had contracted polio while still very young which left him unable to hold any kind of job or movement - considered then as an insurmountable disability! A makeshift hospital was set up near where Roy White lived until 1915 when Drsessions opened their original Baylor Hospital building on Elmendorf Drive just north of Mount Pleasant which eventually provided care for many more patients with spinal cord injuries including White himself! Roy White passed away from complications from polio on January 3rd 1957 at age 47 years old! A new post office opened operations at 910 Main Street on October 4th 1916 under the name "Waco" - later renamed "West University Place" after finally being given city status by City Council vote on November 15th 1922! On July 1st 1938 (the dates modern day Cameron County established itself) First Baptist Church moved from Woodville Road east across FM 158 into our current location adjacent to Cemetery #2!. Reverend Driscoll preached there during those early days before moving onto bigger things down through the years... On October 24th 1951 Second Baptist Church moved into their current location adjacent to Cemetery #1!. In 1865, a group of Texans looking for new land to settle discovered what they believed to be an immense salt mine in the area now known as West University Place. After several trips to the mine, they sent back word that it was not a real mine but instead was a natural gas well. The Texans were so impressed with the find that they decided to name their new settlement after this well-known discovery. The town of West University Place was founded on October 15, 1865 by James W. Hogg and his brother John Ralston Hogg. At its peak,West University Place had a population of around 200 people and consisted of just six buildings - the courthouse, jail, storehouse, doctor's office and school house. By 1875, however, the town had decreased in size due to lack of business and social activity. It is only through commemorative plaques erected at various locations within West University Place that we can appreciate how significant this community was during its time.
The first west of the Mississippi River settlement in Texas was on West University Place, near present-day Dallas. The town was founded by German settlers in 1835 and named after King George Washington's Mount Vernon estate. The town grew rapidly, eventually reaching a population of 10,000 people. In 1849, the area was acquired by the Republic of Texas and renamed Fort Worth. The city continued to grow until it reached its current size in 1907.
