Navy Deployed Gift History in West University Place, Texas The U.S. Naval Forces Europe (NORAD) has a long and proud history of deploying gifts to support the military and civilian communities in their region. In 1991, two years after the end of the Cold War, NORAD deployed a humanitarian convoy led by Rear Admiral John Kirby to help displaced Russians return home. The following year, they again sent a convoy to help refugees from Yugoslavia. More recently, NORAD has sent cargo and material assistance to disaster areas such as Haiti and Liberia. Every gift that is delivered to an area within NORAD’s jurisdiction is important in its own way. For example, when rear admiral Kirby delivered his humanitarian convoy in 1991, it was an act of heroism that helped provide relief for those who had been affected by the end of the Cold War. Similarly, every donation made by citizens or businesses within NORAD’s radius helps support our mission and ensure that we are always available to help our friends and neighbors in need. Since 1997, I have been part of the Navy Deployed Gift History team at NORAD headquarters in McLean Virginia. Our job isto manage all aspects of deployments including shipments and interactions with local communities throughout Europe. This year marks our fifteenth anniversary working withNorad’s 4th Fleet based out of Norfolk Virginia- one of America’s largest naval fleets This past Saturday was very special for me because my wife chose this day as her birthday present - she has wanted me to deploy for over 5 years now! She loves navy gear so much she even asked me if I could wear my new green Bayliner submarine chaser on my next deployment! Needless to say I am excited about this! We will be shipping her both items soon!!!

West University Place is a former city in San Antonio, Texas. It was incorporated as a city on March 3, 1891. The city was annexed by the City of San Antonio on July 15, 1901. On December 8, 1907, West University Place merged with the new City of San Marcos to form one municipality. On January 1, 1920, West University Place merged with theCity of Schertz to form another municipality. Finally on January 1, 1928, West University Place and theCity of McAllen merged to form another municipality. The history of West University Place goes back to 1881 when it was founded as a town by Colonel John Chilton west of what is now downtown San Antonio. The land for the town was donated by General Sam Houston and Major James Wilkinson who were both then military commanders in South Texas during the Mexican-American War. A year later construction began on the first school in what would become West University Place - Chilton School which opened its doors on October 12th 1881. Despite being named after an important general in American history, only six students attended Chilton School at its opening; all from families that donated land for the school’s establishment or contributed money for it’s construction (Chilton himself did not attend). In addition to serving as a schools for local children up until about 1915 when Waco High School replaced them due to an overcrowding issue at Waco Municipal Schools; Chilton also served as home ground for many local baseball and football teams from before annexation into San Antonio until well into World War II when they were disbanded because there were no more acres available for playing fields outside of Waco! In 1892 Mayor Edward Payson built his own brick building adjacent to Chilton School which served as municipal hall until 1906 when mayor Hosea Hawkins moved it inside City Hall where he lived until his death in 1916 (he had been mayor since 1889). During mayorship Hawkins developed plans for annexing nearby municipalities including Schertz and McAllen but these plans never came to fruition due primarily to funding shortages within New York City during those years! After Hawkins died his widow sold her interest in City Hall property back to Mayor Payson’s heirs who proceeded with annexation plans despite having no formal legal recourse – this happened again two years later when Mrs Payson sold her interest back yet again! Ultimately annexation did not take place due mainly because there wasn’t enough political will either within or outside OFA(the old Republic Of Texas)to actually approve it! Eventually White House correspondent Harry S Truman Courtside purchased part of what is now Old Town Plaza from Mrs Payson which led directly to development along Central Avenue beginning around 1950 known today as “West Side Story Boulevard” intersection between Central Ave & Baylor Street while other parts slowly transitioned over time such as Chavez Ravine Road leading northwest out of town towards downtown redevelopment starting circa 1960 known today as East Side Drive though some commercial/ industrial areas still remain located near I-10 approximately ½ mile east central artery
