When Texas became a state in 1845, its legislators decided that it would be better if the Lone Star State had its own militia to protect its citizens from Indian attacks. The first national guard unit was organized in West University Place on August 29, 1846. The unit was made up of nine men and they were paid by the state. It was not until 1861 that the national guard was allowed to wear uniforms! In 1862, Texas seceded from the United States and formed its own government. One of the first things that Texas' new government did was order all state militias to disband. This order caused many Texans to feel frustrated because they had been promised their own militias but now they were being told to disband without any reason or explanation. Eventually, the national guard units in West University Place and other areas were re-organized into separate companies and then again into battalions. These changes happened because there were more wars happening at this time and people wanted their teams of soldiers prepared for anything that might happen next. One of the most famous members of the national guard is probably General Sam Houston who commanded both West University Place's battalion 1st Regiment (Texas Rangers) and Baylor's battalion 3rd Regiment (National Guard). He also served as commander of Fort Worth during Reconstruction after Texas regained her independence from Mexico in 1867.

The first West University Place was founded in 1876, by banker and businessman James W. Hogg. The original building was a two-story frame structure on Main Street in downtown Austin. It served as the city's banking center for many years and is still used as such today. In 1904, the brick and limestone building of West University Place became the first high school in Austin. In 1912, it also became the first college campus in Texas. At its height,West University Place had more than 100 students and 10 faculty members. After World War II, WestUniversityPlace shifted focus to becoming an educational institution focused on professional training opportunities forAustin Professionals. Today,WestUniversityPlace remains one of the most popular education institutions in Austin with over 350 students studying at various levels including undergraduate through graduate programs; undergraduate research programs; Continuing Education classes; alumni groups; and corporate training courses. In 1913, James Waddell Handy founded The Daily Texan newspaper which later became The New York Times Newspaper Corporation. He donated land to make room for his new paper office on Second Street near Congress Avenue in Austin. Handy served as the paper's founder president from 1913 until his death in 1952. His son Jerald Denton Handy would become one of America's most prominent philanthropists and continue fathering many successful businesses throughout his life including Holly Farms Dairy (now Foster Farms), TX Power Company, Corpus Christi Caller News Service (now KHOU) Channel 4 (now ABC 7), and several other notable endeavors). In 1927, American Tobacco Company commissioned architect Daniel Burnham to design a new headquarters for their company located at 24th Street between Lamar Boulevard and Zangger Drive north of downtown Austin - which would eventually be known as The Burnett Building after Mr. Burnham's death in 1954 (). After decades of growth atWU Place Campus & Tower our current facility opened its doors on September 18th 2019!
