West University Place is a community in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area that is located on the campus of Baylor University. The population was 21,916 as of the 2010 census. It is one of the most ethnically diverse areas in Texas and has over 50 languages spoken. The community was founded in 1907 by Dr. J.B. McCulloch, who purchased land from the original owners of what is now Baylor University's West University Place Campus. McCulloch built a small town on his land and named it after himself, West University Place. In 1915, Dr. Wernher von Braun established Baylor's first physics department here and named it Von Braun School of Science & Technology in honor of the German space developer and inventor who had helped develop American rocket technology during World War I and 1920s science fiction movies like "War Of The Worlds." In 2006, portions of West University Place were annexed into neighboring Midtown Dallas to form a mixed-income neighborhood known as Midtown Dallas Parkland which also contains several medical facilities including Methodist Hospital and Presbyterian Hospital (now Dell Medical Center).

West University Place was a large, rolling agricultural area near Dallas in the early 20th century. The site is now an industrial park that includes the former West University Place Air Force Base. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson designated West University Place as the new home of Texas A&M University. The first colleges and universities to be established in Dallas were Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (1895), Southern Methodist University (1902), and Baylor College of Medicine (1904). In 1925, Texas A&M moved from its original location on Elm Street in downtown Dallas to what is now West University Place. In 1961, Texas A&M became one of the Twelve Colleges and Universities accredited by the American Association for Collegiate Education (AACE). That same year, Moody Corporation erected a largest office building in Dallas at 1260 Elm Street. In 1984, IHOP opened its first restaurant in Dallas at 1020 Commerce Drive. It would be their last restaurant until they moved out ofDallas in 1998 when they built their current location on Lower Greenville Road across from UT Arlington's Garner Campus.
West University Place is a large, busy intersection in downtown Dallas that has been the site of many important events in its history. It was once home to the Dallas Police Department's Central Station, which served as the headquarters for the department from 1917 until 1955. In addition, it was also home to Texas Monthly magazine from 1951 to 1975 and The Dallas Morning News from 1952 to 1978.
