West University Place is a small, unincorporated community located in Kerr County, Texas. The community was founded in 1879 by Colonel John West and his wife, Sarah. In 1907, the community became an incorporated municipality and has since been governed by a mayor and six-member city council. The population of thecommunity peaked at 530 in 1972 but has decreased over the years due to various factors such as retirement and relocations of businesses. The history of West University Place can be traced back to 1879 when Colonel John West moved from Arkansas to Kerr County in order to start a new life after leaving his previous post as commandant at Fort Smith Military Academy. He named his new town after himself – West University – in honor of his educational achievements at Fort Smith. Over time, other pioneers also came to live in the area including Captain James Hogg who purchased land east of the current town limits on which he built a house known as Hogg's Cabin. This cabin remains standing today and is one of only two remaining examples of early settler architecture in the community. In 1907, the town became an incorporated municipality because it had become apparent that there was no future for it within Kerr County if it remained unincorporated. The first mayor was Waddell Sizemore who served from 1907 until 1911; Jno Ladd who served from 1911 until 1916; Aimer Cooksey from 1916 until 1919; Fred Crouch from 1919 until 1923; Harry Pritchard from 1923 until 1927; and Homer Denton from 1927 until 1931. During these years,West University Place achieved some notoriety due to its unique government structure which included an elected Mayor/Council with six members instead of just three like most townships throughout Texas at that time. During World War II, many businesses relocated to West University Place due to wartime shortages across Texas. These businesses included Armour & Co., Driggs' Drug Store, Fordham Cigar Company, Kokomo Clothing Store & Supply Company and several others which remain extant today such as Kokomo Tire & Rubber Company (now part of Shell) and Eastland Arsenal Ammunition Plant (now partsheid Alamogordo). As World War II ended, many soldiers returned home with families or went on leave and never returned to their old posts so much as they left behind memories of their service that continue through song lyrics or stories told down through generations.
