West University Place is a city in Dallas, Texas and the seat of Dallas County. The population was 239,814 as of the 2010 census. It has an estimated population of 281,792 in 2020. The city is named after West Point on Long Island in New York City, which served as the original site for what would become Dallas. The first settlers to the area were farmers and ranchers who arrived during the early 1800s. They soon began to develop land into a town that today can be found primarily within its boundaries: west of Interstate 30 and south of I-635. By 1900, West University Place had a population of over 2,000 people. One major event that occurred in West University Place was World War II when many residents supported the United States through their involvement in the military. In 1947, upon the creation of Dallas County, West University Place became its county seat. Over time however, more and more businesses moved out to larger cities such as Arlington or Mesquite due to zoning laws that favored large towns over smaller ones. In 2000, Mayor David Briley announced plans for redevelopment of downtown (then called "the district"). This project would see demolition of most existing buildings along with reconstruction using new designs and techniques including green roofs and energy efficiency goals which would have a dramatic impact on energy consumption by downtown businesses. Opposition from business owners led to Briley's decision not to pursue development at this point in time; it did not resume until 2007 when developer Kia Motors decided they wanted to build a new building on Elm Street between McKinney Boulevard and Central Expressway near Greenville Avenue). However opposition again arose around aspects like height restrictions which effectively limited development potential within blocks surrounding downtown while also impacting adjacent neighborhoods (this issue still continues today with some proposed developments nearby exceeding zoning limits). West University Place is a neighborhood in Austin, Texas, United States. It was originally developed as the commercial center of the city and has been home to many businesses and residents since its establishment in 1887. The neighborhood now includes several blocks of downtown Austin, as well as several smaller streets that run parallel to it. It is also home to the University of Texas at Austin. The area that makes up West University Place today was first developed as an agricultural district by settlers from East Tennessee in the late 1800s. By 1907, most of what is today West University Place had been built and began to take form as a residential neighborhood when developers purchased land around Lady Bird Lake from local farmers and ranchers. The initial plans for what would become West University Place called for a primarily wooden structure with a small brick addition on top which would serve as the school’s Administration Building. However, due to financial difficulties during World War I, the builder instead opted for a more ornate brick building with metal balconies and turrets. In 1925, Waco-based Methodist Episcopal Church moved its services from their original location on Lavaca Street in downtown Waco (now part of UT Austin) to what is now known as Stubb's Performance Hall on Second Street in West University Place. At this time, much of what is now Downtown Austin was still rural farmland including parts of what is today WestUniversityPlace. In 1941, when UTAustin opened its doors after years of planning and construction under then-President David Starr Jordan, part of Campus Life zone 1 (later Campus Life Zone 2), WestUniversityPlace became one block east of Interstate 35 between Fifth Street and Sixth Street across from Main Library/UTAustin Campus Road(now First Avenue). It wasn't until 1984 that students began moving into the area surrounding Main Library/UTAustin Campus Road which bisectedWestUniversityPlace along SixthStreet north-south while main campus remained east side going past Lamar Boulevard/Hertz Mill Rd./Neches Hills Rd./Waco High School (later Neches Hills Elementary School).
