Smith of the Weslaco detachment of the Texas Rangers. At that time, policemen in Texas were provided with only civilian clothes and equipment. In 1924, when the state of Texas created its own law enforcement agency, the Republic Police Department (RPD), officers were given uniforms and new equipment. In 1939, after annexation by Mexico added another municipal government toTexas, the RPD began receiving gifts from Mexican officials in an attempt to improve relations between both sides. One such gift was a set of military-style pants and a rifle for Sergeant Joe Ferguson, who became acting sheriff after Sheriff Don Lacy resigned due to health problems. Between 1941 and 1945, when World War II began, Lieutenant Colonel John Wetherbee donated three motorcycle units and assorted other equipment to the RPD as part of his war effort donations. During much of this time period, the department also received monetary donations from local businesses and individuals interested in helping support law enforcement services in their community. It is interesting to note that most policemen in Weslaco came from humble backgrounds - many started their careers as firefighters or ambulance drivers before joining the police force. Since becoming an independent law enforcement agency on January 1st 1992, Weslaco’sPolice Department has enjoyed continued success through donation drives and fundraising events throughout our community. Weslaco is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,817 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hudspeth County. The name Weslaco comes from "Wesley" and "Laco" or "Lacochete." There have been many changes to the town's name over time, but it has always been spelled with a double letter for the most part. The first residents of Weslaco were Dutch settlers who arrived in 1836. In 1841 they named their new community Fort Larned after General James Ewell larned who had helped lead Confederate forces during the Texan Civil War. The first post office in Weslaco was established in 1842 and was called Fort Worth. In 1845 some citizens petitioned to change the name to Weslaco because they felt that it would be more accurate if it referred to a small village than a large city situated on an island in Hudspeth County. On July 5, 1865, voters approved the move by two-thirds of those present at a special election to rename the city Weslaco after Simeon Wesley Lilley who had served as mayor of Austin from 1860 until his death in 1865 and also as president of Baylor University from 1863 until his death. Lilley's wife Jane donated land for what is now downtown Weslaco and he endowed money towards its development which has resulted in many buildings being built within walking distance of each other on Main Street throughout history including City Hall (1890), State Capitol (1901), Methodist Church (1893), First Baptist Church (1892), Baylor University (1863-1968) and Stonewall Jackson High School (1989). In 1906 local banker Clements Waddell offered land for construction of what would become Sam Houston State University which began classes on October 1, 1907. After years of fundraising efforts by students, faculty and staff alike, Sam Houston State University became one of America's largest universities with over 40 colleges and schools affiliated with it when it opened its doors for business on September 2, 1923! Over $200 million was invested into Student Financial Aid programs alone during its early years making Sam Houston State one of America's largest recipients both financially and academically! Today Rice University is adjacent to Sam Houston State University across Interstate 45 just north of downtownHouston while UT Austin is adjacent to Sam HoustonStateUniversity across I-45 east of downtownHouston along 610 Loop Road serving as both campuses' southern terminus!
